Harissa from Foodly in a ½ cup modern tin.
How to Use Harissa
Harissa is spicy and bold, a mix of chile powders and fragrant spices such as paprika and cumin. Typically, Harissa is made into a paste or sauce. You can buy Harissa paste and sauce pre-made at the grocery store, but using our Harissa spice mix allows you to decide what type of paste or sauce you want to make and what quality of ingredients you wish to use.
The simplest and most common way to enjoy harissa is to create a paste by blending one part harissa with an equal part of top-quality olive oil and let sit overnight. Harissa paste is a potent condiment for sausages, gyros, pita wraps, many Halal dishes, and the like.
Harissa sauce is usually different than harissa paste by adding additional ingredients and blending into something more like a puree than a paste. The resulting sauce is excellent on chicken or to add a Moroccan flair to steak.
With Harissa sauce, roasted sweet red peppers are used to cut the heat of the harissa blend. Start by roasting two large red bell peppers until the skins are charred, and then remove the skin and seeds. Add roasted peppers, two to three tablespoons of harissa spice, an equal amount of high-quality olive oil, a handful of garlic cloves, salt, and a few teaspoons of lemon juice to a food processor or blender. You may also add a tablespoon of tomato paste if desired. Blend into a rich red sauce and then refrigerate at least one day before using.
